More Efforts and Multiple Measures Together to Improve the Quality of Talent Training

In recent years, International College of XMU has always adhered to the fundamental task of cultivating talents with high morality, actively coordinating various resources, and attaching importance to improve the quality of the talent training. In 2020, our college made new breakthroughs in the quality of talent training. 23 students were awarded a first-class honour degree among the 26 students who went to study in Dublin Business School in Ireland in the fourth academic year in 2020, accounting for 88.46%, which hit a new high. Among the graduates in 2020, 83 students, 45% of the graduates went abroad for further studies, of which 86.7% (72 graduates) entered the top 100 universities in the world, and 5 students were admitted by the British G5 universities. 19 students went to well-known universities in China for further study and 14 of them were exempted from examination, an increase of 75% compared with the previous year, and the rate of the examination-exemption reached 100%. The rate that graduates signed contracts with state-owned enterprises is 45%, including well-known state-owned enterprises such as State Grid, China Telecom, CITIC Securities, and China Construction Bank.

This year, due to the impact of the epidemic, the overall employment situation has become more complicated. In such a general environment, the employment of 2020 graduates can still achieve good results, which is inseparable from the college's long-term emphasis on the quality of talent training and continuous promotion of t students’ all-around development.

 

Deepen Innovation and Continuously Improve the Curriculum System

In recent years, the college has continuously deepened reforms in the talent cultivation model and curriculum system. The first is to integrate the advantages of Chinese and foreign curriculum system. The Sino-Foreign Educational Cooperation Program jointly held by Xiamen University and Dublin Business School (XMU-DBS) project introduces the concept of higher education from Dublin Business School in Ireland, referring the foreign teaching content systems and teaching methods, combines with the national conditions and background and the discipline characteristics of Xiamen University, absorbs and digests them; the existing curriculum system makes full use of accounting and finance of Xiamen University and ACCA applied teaching of Dublin Business School, which have effectively supported the cultivation goals of both Chinese and foreign sides. The second is to coordinate resources. The college invited experts and scholars in various fields to hold lectures on the frontiers of the subject and communicate with students face to face. In the fall semester of 2020, the college also incorporated Lectures on Frontier Subjects into the course credit system, and successively held Analysis of Macroeconomic and Financial Development in the Post-epidemic Era, Several Difficult Problems in Economic Responsibility Auditing, RMB Internationalization: Process, Dilemma and Responses-Based on the perspective of unprecedented change of the century”, six lectures on the frontier disciplines, which help students enrich their professional knowledge and stimulate their strategic and forward-looking thinking about the disciplines. The third is to innovate teaching content and teaching mode. To update educational concepts and teaching methods, to realize the transition from teacher-centered to student-centered, to promote blended teaching, flipped classrooms, large class lectures, small class seminars and other new teaching methods, and continue to promote educational reform practices and teaching experience summaries. This project has been awarded one flipped classroom, curriculum ideology and politics, Xiamen University Teaching Reform Research project, and online open course construction project. Two courses were selected as the university’s first-class undergraduate curriculum construction project at university level, and one course was selected as provincial first-class undergraduate curriculum construction project.

 

Incorporate Everything and Strengthen the Training of International Talents

The college always aims at cultivating all kinds of high-quality international talents, and constantly improves the mechanism of training international talents. Among the courses offered by the college, 23 courses are taught in English and 22 courses are taught in bilingual languages. The college also offers oral English classes, English academic writing classes, and IELTS tutoring classes for XMU- DBS program’s students. These courses have greatly improved the students’ professional English level. Among the previous students, 213 students have achieved an IELTS score of 7 or more, and they won the special IELTS high score scholarship awarded by the college. The college also actively invites well-known famous professors from abroad to open elective courses and hold lectures, and encourage students to go abroad for exchanges, and broaden their international horizons. Since 2011, 228 students have participated in world-renowned long-term and short-term exchange programs such as the University of Cambridge, Waseda University in Japan, University of California, Berkeley, and London School of Economics, Newcastle University in the United Kingdom, the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

 

The international talent training model that integrates the characteristics of foreign education give me a high level of English language ability and comprehensive professional skills, The Chinese-English bilingual teaching provides me with a good professional learning environment. Teachers pay great attention to interaction in teaching, which strengthens my thinking and reaction skills in the exchanges and discussions. Excellent English proficiency and international horizon make the students of our college stand out in the interviews. This is the 16th-level exemption for the XMU-DBS program. The acceptance speech of the International Academy is a full affirmation of the International College's continuous innovation of the talent training model and the promotion of international talent training. These are the acceptance speech by the exempt students from the XMU-DBS program in 2016, which also is a full affirmation of the International College's continuous innovation of talent training mode and the promotion of  international talent training.

 

Multiple Measures Simultaneously Full Preparation for Career Guidance 

In order to further promote the employment of students and improve the quality of employment, the college takes the initiative and takes multiple measures to promote employment guidance. During the graduation season, the college held a number of employment experience sharing meetings and work experience sharing meetings, inviting graduated alumni and students who have succeeded in job hunting to connect with each other in the cloud to improve students' professional level and employment skills, and lay a solid foundation for professional and job hunting knowledge. The college class counselors set up student employment accounts, actively and timely release all kinds of employment-demand information, point-to-point employment information, one-to-one precise guidance; hold seminars for unemployed students, answer employment doubts; teach students resume making, interview skills, group interview simulation and other job hunting skills, precise guidance to help students improve their employment skills.

In the face of special and complicated employment situation this year, the college's comprehensive planning, multiple measures, and precise guidance have enabled the 2020 graduates to have high-quality employment and achieved satisfying result.

 

Talents governs the world better, while education makes talents Talent training is a grand systematic project, which needs to keep pace with the times and constantly bring forth the new. In the future, the college will continue to attach importance to talent training, adhere to the five educations simultaneously, promote the innovation of talent training models and systems and mechanisms, and improve the quality of talent training in the college with a broader vision, a more open attitude, and more persistent efforts. The school strive to contribute to the goal of double first-class construction of XMU and cultivates batch after batch of talents for national rejuvenation, social development, and human progress.
