Start from this semester, when students and teachers enter the classrooms in the main building 2, they will find a new equipment exists——Phone pouch. Students mute or shut down their phones and put them into the wall pouch before class beginning, only when the class is over can they take back phones.

Mr. Tao, dean of the International College, said that Phone pouches are equipped to create a purely study environment, where students won’t be distracted by mobile phones. Nowadays, people swipe their smart phones when attending parties, walking and even when having meals, which indicated that we are becoming more and more reliant on cell phones. If students pay too much attention on their phones while teacher is conscientiously teaching, it may cause bad effects on students’ academic and disrupt the orderly operation of teaching. On the other hand, we hope students put down the smart phones autonomously instead of being passively discouraged, which means help them transform heteronomy into self-discipline. Good learning habits are especially critical for students of International College students since the majority of them will study abroad in the future, and these qualities can help them adjust to life and study in overseas cooperative universities.

Actually, students are no stranger to phone pouch, as some teachers had individually used it previously. At present, after widely hearings and careful consideration, college leadership determined to promote phone pouch in the whole college, and equipped it in every classroom to create a favorable learning atmosphere.

“There are less and less students who play with the phone in my class, I myself also become more enthusiastic in teaching as I know they are listening carefully.” Apparently, this approach is supported by college teachers, who said that students generally made significant progress in class performance. A lot of English relevant courses are provided in the International College, where students are accustomed to searching English words on phones. However, now teachers will ask them to look up on dictionaries or focus on new words in this lesson before class starting officially.
As to the situation that students want to take photos of the courseware, “I often send my flash including organized knowledge point to my students after class, so there’s no need for them to take photos in class.” said by lecturer Roujie Wang. In spite of that, taking notes efficiently in class is also an important skill to help students adjust to English-studying environment, as well as enhance academic skills. Besides, counselors emphasized the 24-hour emergency call of college again to all the parents: 0592-2881300. Parents can contact us in emergent situations.
A large group of students highly appreciated it since the initiative of creating ‘non-phone class’ together was promoted. “I used to think there may be someone send massage to me, so I can’t help but swipe my phone again and again. Thanks for the phone pouch, now I’m much more concentrated in class and be able to study efficiently.” Said by a student. “It’s kind of hard to adjust at first. But it goes well after insisting for few times, in that it minimizes the disruption, help me to keep up with your teacher and improve mutual communication between us.” another student said.

In addition to equipped with mobile phone pouch for each classroom in the Main Building 2, the leaders of International College also organized a teaching supervision team formed by administrative teachers and counselors to conduct daily check-ups, propose measures to ban smoking in public, promote civilized classes, and pay great attention to teaching quality. In recent years, the college has achieved fruitful teaching results and has cultivated a large number of graduates with international perspectives. Many graduates went to Oxford University, London School of Economics and Political Science, Bristol University, Warwick University, Melbourne University of Australia, University of Sydney, Columbia University, and the National University of Singapore to study for their master's degree. Students who got postgraduate recommendation successfully were admitted to Peking University, Renmin University of China, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, and Nanjing University. Among the students who chose to work, they were employed by the ‘Big Four’ accounting firms such as Deloitte and KPMG, others also entered the financial systems of Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Agricultural Bank, Industrial and Commercial Bank, Xiamen Bank, Ping An Trust, and Ping An Property Insurance.
