Holding the Speeches of Study in the UK on Zhangzhou Campus on 18th December, 2009 by British Council
On 18th December, the officers of British Council, Ms. May Huang and Mr. Patrick Chen were invited by the International College to come over to give the students a speech about going UK to study in Zhangzhou Campus, introducing IELTS test and British Higher Education.

First, Mr. Patrick Chen explained the main contents of IELTS, structure of IELTS, scoring, regulations and test-taking skills. In comparison of TOEFL, IELTS takes one-on-one interview to evaluate test-takers’ oral capability which is more reasonable. Mr. Chen suggested that test-takers should focus on the fluency and consistency of conversation. In terms of writing, he suggested that test-takers should read more English books and articles. Later, he has used the animation to demonstrate the test procedure of IELTS and some regulations.
Ms. May Huang introduced the characteristics of UK education(1)the high quality, the population of UK is only less 1% of the world population, but the science researches occupied11% of the total world researches (2)the wide range of variety of UK university course. After one year of learning, if necessary, people can transfer to another profession.Ms. May Huang has taken the story of the status of King Henry VIII as an example to explain the long-lasting efforts of UK higher education toward the freedom of learning.(3)The combination of UK education and enterprises which provides the students more hands-on business experiences. She also suggested students to choose sandwich courses:2+1+1 model, the first, second and the fourth school years stay at school to learn necessary theories and the third year to go to have one-year practical training. In this way, students can apply what they learned in classroom to apply to the real workplaces.
Ms. May Huang also introduced the learning methods of UK education. By teaching how to listen to lectures, note-taking, employing the resources of the libraries and writing essays, students will learn effectively by attending seminars, group reports, group discussion and doing projects to cultivate independent thinking and learning skills.
