Lv Dongru, gained her Master Degree at University of Macau, majoring in Translation studies, TEM 8. She is a member of the Macau Federation of Translators and Interpreters. She used to serve as tutor in English Writing and Communication Center in University of Macau. She joined International College of Xiamen University after graduation and engaged in English teaching.

Question 1: As a translation researcher, why did you choose to be a teacher? What’s the biggest feeling since your teaching? ”
I think there are many similarities between translation researchers and teachers. They both shoulder the responsibility of solving puzzles. They both need to continuously learn and enrich yourself to improve the knowledge level and professional ability. I enjoy the process of discussing and learning together with my classmates in class, my teaching experience in the language center of the University of Macau made me deeply realize the greatness of the teacher’s work, and I am more determined to be a teacher.

The teaching experience made me deeply realized “one minute on stage, ten years off stage”. In order to prepare a 90-minute class and better present the course content to students, it takes days or even weeks to design, collect materials, arrange content and design courseware. Whenever I see students actively participating in the classroom, I feel all the efforts are worthwhile. As a teacher, I gained a lot of happiness. It made me particularly gratified and moved when students passed the exam, accepted by their favorite school, and still remembered the knowledge points I once taught after they graduated. I think this should be the happiest moment to be a teacher.

Question 2:You’re very popular among the student with your relaxed and humorous style. How did you arouse the students’ enthusiasm?
I think that as a teacher, you need to keep learning, not only the professional knowledge, but also related knowledge in other fields to form your unique teaching style. Most of our textbooks are classic, and the background and materials are relatively old, so it’s difficult to arouse students’ interest. So, when I prepare the lessons, I will try to know the students’ preference in advance and find some materials related to the course to arouse students’ interest, such as current affairs, social entertainment news. At the same time, I will design some short interactive games or prepare some props related to the content, which not only mobilize the classroom atmosphere, but also improve the interaction. To improve the teaching effect, off-class communication is also particularly important, through which I know what they like and are interested in and can feel their youthful vitality. In the class, I can occasionally use some catchwords to tease them, which makes the class atmosphere more relaxed and pleasant. Teaching and learning in fun.

Question 3: For the students who are going to study abroad, English learning is very important. Could you provide some suggestions or good ways for them to improve their English in the epidemic period?
English is an important "stepping stone" for students to apply for their favorite colleges and universities abroad. The time for our students' English learning is very tight and the task is heavy. Due to the epidemic, students have started the "home study" mode, and learning at home will inevitably be distracted. It is recommended that students create a small world where they can study with peace of mind. Besides going to class on time, arrange the self-study time reasonably. Take English reading as an example. It is recommended that students arrange a certain time every day for reading, choose news reports or related topics that they are interested in. Language learning is the process of input to acquisition, in which attention and frequency play a vital role. For example, the report on the epidemic is updated every day. When you first start to read related English reports, you may need to find more new words or related terms. And it takes a lot of time to finish reading an article. After a few days, you will find a lot of repeated words in the reports and your reading speed will gradually increase. This is the help that repeated practice and long-term memory bring to learning.

Besides, many official English learning accounts can also be used to supervise students by daily attendance and improve their English level by make full use of the fragmented time. English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are complementary, as long as the students persevere, after the end of the epidemic, you will make much progress.
