Su Jing: Adhere to the Original Aspiration and Persevering

Su Jing, with Master Degree, once worked in a foreign bank and joined International College(IC), Xiamen University in 2008. He was responsible for the college's study abroad guidance, study abroad program coordination, foreign affairs reception, and English journal editing. Since 2018, he has served as a class counselor of the foundation program.


Find the Original Aspiration at IC

Time flies. Mr. Su has been working at International College for nearly 15 years. He has studied and worked in North America for many years, and has experienced various ups and downs in his overseas study and career. After returning to China, he hopes to help more students avoid detours on the way to study abroad. In 2008, upholding this original intention and belief, he joined International College, Xiamen University.

The first year Mr Su entering International College coincides with the graduation class of the first 2006 program which is about to go abroad. At that time, International College, as the first batch of key colleges and universities that set up the foundation programs to study abroad in China under Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE), had few cases to learn in terms of overseas guidance, and students were faced with the situation that there were many foreign cooperative colleges and universities, with different types and characteristics. Therefore, Mr Su took the initiative to contact and communicate with foreign cooperative colleges and universities, and invited them to introduce the colleges and universities to students, Mr. Su carefully sorted out the advantages, characteristics and the course requirements of each cooperative school, and timely held class meetings to guide students to prepare application materials and share their experience and understanding of studying abroad.


Mr. Su had an in-depth and heart to heart talk with each graduate, discussed and analyzed with the students, and selected a more suitable way to study abroad. At the same time, Mr. Su was also actively invited to visit foreign cooperative colleges and the headquarters of the program, and exchanged with students studying abroad, accumulating rich experience in guiding students studying abroad. Today, Mr. Su still often shares the latest trends of studying abroad with his students and guides them to make targeted preparations for studying abroad.


Help students to explore interests, strengths, and potentials


In Mr. Su's view, International College has built a platform for students to acquire high-quality education resources abroad through studying abroad. Studying abroad is not only to further study professional knowledge, but also to broaden horizons through studying and living abroad, and to communicate and cooperate with people from different countries and ethnic groups, so as to obtain more information, improve interpersonal skills, and strengthen independent ability.


Combining the past experience of studying abroad and years of experience in guiding students to study abroad, Mr. Su suggested that the students should continue to explore and discover three aspects of themselves through their study and practice in the university: Interests, interest is the best teacher , with hobbies and interests, students are willing to invest more time and energy; Advantages, they should clarify what they are good at, and learn how to display their own characteristics and strengths more effectively; and potentiality, each student has potential in certain fields, but they are often overlooked and ignored. We should find their potential points and help them improve their heights and achieve their goals.

Treat each student sincerely with love, patience and sense of responsibility


Mr. Su often said, "A comprehensive and in-depth understanding of students is the starting point for loving students, and it is also the foundation for doing a good job with students." He is strict with himself in the position of counselor and fulfills his duties. For conflicts in the student dormitory, there is his sincere mediation; for students who are physically and mentally uncomfortable, there is his warm-hearted care; for students who violate discipline and regulations, there is his earnest instructions; for students with academic difficulties, there is his patient and careful analysis.


In his daily work, he cares for students, discovers the shining points of students with heart, and uses the correct guidance and positive education method to fasten the first buttons in their lives. Student Xiao said: "When the school started, I was still relatively naive. One evening, I was playing with my mobile phone and was spotted by Mr Su. What surprised me is that he didn't say much, and just asked me some basic information, not in a reproachful attitude, but the tone of concern. In the previous study environment, we always passively accepted the teacher's orders. After listening to the cold orders for a long time, it is inevitable that we will rebel. However, Mr Su showed a kind of concern from the perspective of persuading students to think about themselves, while helping us, he also take into account our thoughts and emotions. In fact, teaching students does not necessarily require too many rules and regulations. Sometimes such simple persuasion is like a gentle sea breeze, bringing comfort."

After successfully sending off the 2017 program graduates, in September 2020, Mr. Su came to Zhangzhou campus with International College to welcome the freshmen of 2020.

Because there is only one class of students, in addition to learn English in the first year, Mr. Su hopes that new students can experience campus life and improve themselves in the university. Therefore, Mr. Su invested a lot of energy in the construction of the Student Union on Zhangzhou Campus. Through a series of interviews and selections, a high-quality student cadre team has been established: an event organization and planning department with active thinking and dedication; a publicity department with delicate writing, good at photography and new media thinking; A hard-working and conscientious supervision department; and a sports department with sports talent and excellent organization of sports activities.


Conclusion:

Working with heart, students see it in the eyes, remember it in their hearts. Every move affects and educates students in a subtle way; work with love, love can move people and change people, and students will remember it for a lifetime. Mr. Su said frankly that although he has not been a counselor for a long time, in the past three years, he has been happy and even more fortunate. Along the way, the students gave him unreserved trust, care and support. This happy and lucky companionship can only be obtained as a college counselor! I hope that in the future, I will still not change my original intention, and I will still be the "Mr. Su" who runs in love and is passionate about work and life!
